The Wall

by Elizabeth Howard

This heat has
No name at all until
You remind yourself
He. Is. There.
Exit the climate-controlled
Iceblock
Bedroom
Only to hit
The Wall.

The caress of divine details

by Elizabeth Howard

Divine Details nabokov

Since I was diagnosed with depression decades ago (age 15), I have had some time to discover a few things that do help me. Some of those things are the usual sort of things: going for walks, taking medication, having a good support system, knowing that my diagnosis is a medical one — that I’m…

What do you struggle with? For me it's this life o What do you struggle with? For me it's this life of making myself into something -- but I already feel whole and full and overflowing. So the something is something that is supposed to have meaning to others? I am not sure. I go for a walk alone in this world and, tbh, I know exactly who I am. Why am I working so hard to tell everyone else? Isn't it obvious?

Why am i trying to tell my story/stories to others? I am not sure. Except that I feel very comforted by the stories that others share with me.

So it's a constant push and pull for me to try and "control" myself in a way that allows others to see me. Do I really want to be seen? Do you?

I'm really tired. But I keep on plugging away.

Also, I am 99.9 percent sure I am undiagnosed ADHD --- really sorry to everyone that I've interrupted these many years. If you want to catch up with my brain, you are going to have to RUN, or at the very least speed walk.

Anyway, good morning from out here on the moon.

Be open to see others as they see themselves. Let Be open to see others as they see themselves. Let them be who they are.

Once I told my mother — when i was about 40 or so:

“Mom you need to accept me for who I am.“
When the words came out of my mouth I was as surprised as she was.

“Oh!” she said, then. “Ok.”

I don’t think I can say there was some great “turnaround” that day. Except that I felt better for saying it.

And I know she did hear me.

Good morning. We had thunderstorms at 4 a.m. and I Good morning. We had thunderstorms at 4 a.m. and I was awake for them. If you know me, you know I never want to miss a thunderstorm. I was awake at 6:15 to drop a kiddo at work then and was grace with these morning skies.

So yes, there was a storm. But, you know it's a metaphor too.

I've long been a part of a supportive writing comm I've long been a part of a supportive writing community and that makes all the difference in the world to a writer.

Back in Connecticut, my writing pals (led by Milford poet laureate emeritus @mctheebs) hosted a brilliant workshop that included both writing and critique. It's been my plan for awhile to offer a workshop of my own in a similar way.

I am so pleased that Diana and Allen Rendell are giving us space at @artschoolkc in Downtown Lee's Summit to try this thing out.

Starting this Fall -- September 10 -- I will be hosting a Sunday evening writing workshop with guided, empowering critique at Art School in Downtown Lee's Summit.

The group is open to writers of all levels and will include a period of journaling on a theme from prompts, followed by the opportunity to share your writing or to bring and share 3-4 pages of something your are currently working on.

If you've never experienced critique in a guided setting, this is your chance.

Art School is a art-filled location in Lee's Summit, convenient to writers in Raytown, south Kansas City area, with only a short drive from Leawood, Prairie Village, Overland Park. TBH, it's only a short drive out from Midtown KC!

Limited seating. Hope to see you there. Feel free to message me with any questions.

It’s hard to know what goes on in our friends’ It’s hard to know what goes on in our friends’ and loved ones' interior lives. I think we probably have those really few close friends who let us know when life isn’t great, when they are depressed or struggling.

But then there is also that whole wave of people -- cousins, acquaintances, friends, family who we don’t see enough, etc. -- who may be having a bad day. Or who may be struggling quietly with something more.

It’s that “something more” -- that quiet suffering beyond our ken -- that shifts meaning in a life.

Does this ever happen to you? Every now and then I get a “feeling” that something isn’t quite right with someone. It’s just that “feeling” you get that something is off. Maybe I haven’t heard from them in awhile. Or their responses are slow on the uptake. It might not be anything more than a feeling.

This is a wisdom -- we have this. It takes some practice, to pay attention. And then it takes compassion to respond with wholehearted presence.

As Cuong Lu says, responding to this feeling is "listening with empathy" -- and it's an insight and wisdom we all have. It gives us a chance to respond, with generosity. #lovingkindness #compassion365

Canada is BIG. This is just one inlet — the Saan Canada is BIG. This is just one inlet — the Saanich Inlet — off Vancouver Island between Malahat and Bamberton. In the distance are the Gulf Islands. In detail on the second photo, a boat that’s probably fairly good sized. And then just a few of billions of Douglas Fir trees — so tall. And then next, one tree and one flower in the expansive @thebutchartgardens in Victoria, at the south end of the island, built 100+ years ago in an old limestone mine. Amazing beautiful and so so big.

Happy 4th of July from Penny—who will be VERY ha Happy 4th of July from Penny—who will be VERY happy when everyone stops exploding things around here! Thunder vest helps a little… but tbh, seems like the kids in the ‘hood start blowing sh*t up the day the fireworks tents go up. I’ve definitely changed my tune on fireworks — of course one day to celebrate is doable, but the nonstop, all day long crackity-crack from June 30th on is too much. Penny would like to relax. And I guess I suppose there are many of us that wish it didn’t sound like we were at war. 🐶🧨😭😔
