“You can’t imagine how much a dead man weighs.”
– What the grandfather of Gabriel Garcia Marquez often told him.
Quoted from “A Writer’s Almanac”, March 6, 2009.
I’ve gotten quite taken with the sound of Garrison Keillor’s voice on my Honda Fit speakers.
His Lake Wobegone days are too sentimental for me most of the time, but now I download The Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Keillor. It is a short radio podcast giving the “today in history” of writers from across the world. And there is a poem that he reads, in his sagging, shifting way. Keillor’s voice is a disappointed flag, huffing on a flagpole on a half-breezy day.
You can get the podcast here… It’s a daily affair, as almanacs tend to be.
Don’t freak out though– each entry is brief (no more than 5 minutes). Besides if you get behind, it doesn’t matter. Do like I do and listen to one right after another, day after day– stories and poems and anecdotes– until you have to turn it off because the sing-song sound of Keillor– wooden boat kissing the wet surface of a lake over and over again– is lulling you into its vortex of tranquility.
